Add two hyper boys, one shattered Mummy, flour oil salt and water…

And what do you get on a sunday morning?
Two boys playing quietly with playdough!!!!
We now have green glittery playdough and various “Models” made from playdough. I have some peace and quiet and it took about five minutes to make. Instant calm! lol

The recipe is as follows:
Twwo cups of plain flour
1/2 a cup of salt
1 cup of water
1 and a 1/2 Tablespoons of oil
Food colouring (optional)

Basically mix the salt and flour in a big bowl,
mix a drop of food colouring into the water.
add the oil and water to the bowl.
Mix it all together and hey presto, playdough!
If the mix is still too runny add more flour until your happy with the consistancy, apparently it will keep for up to two weeks in an airtight box.
Much cheaper than shop bought stuff!

Jack and Mummy’s Adventure!

On a Monday afternoon Luke goes to Pre school for a couple of hours. Normally a Jacks godfather Graham calls in on his dinner break from college for a coffee and a chance to see Jack. Today though he wasn’t coming so I decided to take Jack to the library, I’m ashamed to say that although Luke’s been a few times I haven’t taken Jack yet. They have so many books here that we’ve never really had the need to use the library, but I used to love going and he’s heard Luke talking about going and as been asking to go for ages.
After dropping Luke off i realised that our local library still lives in the dark ages and closes at dinner time for an hour so we had an hour to kill. I decided we’d have a quick drive up to Hardwick Hall and see what animals we could see. Normally there’s sheep and the odd cow wandering around as you approach the hall but today the farmer had obviously decided to bring them closer to the farm because of the bad weather.
Jack was a bit disappointed so I drove towards the Farm shop hoping to see some. We were rewarded with loads of sheep wandering round. They are free roaming up there so we had a few in the middle of the road. One sheep even stood staring at the car for about two minutes before he turned round and slowly wandered off. Jack was giggling his head off and shouting baaaat them and “move please sheepsys!”.
As we got to the farm shop to turn round we discovered where all the cows etc were hidden, the Barn!
So after a few minutes of looking at them and making all the farm noises and getting excited about the “massif Massif tactor” we decided it was time to have a slow drive back to the library. My car is disgusting! It looks like its been through a rally course, not a quick trip up to the local Country Park! Karl even noticed how bad it was in the dark last night when he got home from work.
I think we can safely say that Jack was impressed with the library, They are really child friendly in skegby, and Ive been in a few times with Luke for the rhyme rattle and roll session they hold on a Friday morning so I didn’t have to worry about him being quiet. He chose a book for himself (Monkey and Me) and one for Luke (Wizzil) and was even more impressed when they gave him his own library card! Of course he’s had to have the little snap off part for his keyring, and he gave Luke his too when we picked him up from Nursery.
We got back and he excitedly told Luke all about our “ventures” and has already asked to go back to the library to swap his book.
All in all it was a nice way to spend some time with just Jack, it was just a pity the weather was so bad or we’d have been able to go for a quick walk round Hardwick Hall.
We weren’t the only ones to have a nice day yesterday by the sounds of it either.

Richard sounds like he had fun http://onegeekspeaks.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/a-strange-school-day/

“Its like a little christmas miracle”

Not to sound too cheesy but that’s exactly how one of Jacks teachers described his sudden change in mood at school last week. He’s stopped crying when I drop him off and even takes his coat off and goes and sits himself down in group time. Apparently he’s joining in with things more, speaking to the other children and just generally a much happier little boy at nursery.

Whats bought about this sudden change? Well a week last friday ago he had the operation to fit bilateral grometts (In both ears in other words)

He went in at 7.30, went to theatre at 10.30, and by 11.30 was sat up in bed eating toast like he was starving! We were home by 2pm and you really wouldn’t have guessed he’d had anything done. He was a star all the way through. Really good. He just sat and watched them while they put the drips into his hands and never flinched apparently. All in all we’re really proud of him.

Since he’s had it done we’ve definately noticed a difference. He’s not saying “Sorry?” every time we say something to him because he’s not heard us. He also responds better to people and seems happier.

We’ll just have to see how much things improve for him, but like Someone else has said, so far its been like our own little christmas miracle!

Well we went to see the ENT surgeon…

And despite waiting an hour and a half AFTER our appointment time (AGAIN!) It all went well!

He went a week last tuesday ago and yesterday I got back home and there was a letter asking me to call and make his appointment to have his gromits put in…

He goes in on December 5th! So in less than 5 weeks we’ve had his hearing test and it will be done and dusted hopefully! I really hope it makes a difference for him. Just recently I’ve noticed he’s been asking us to repeat ourselves more and more often. (Although he does sound cute when he says “Sorry??” instead of pardon lol)

It will be nice for him to go to disco’s and what have you and not complain that its hurting his ears etc.

Im just not looking forward to the actual day!

Its been a while!

Whats been happening in the Derner household?

Well Jacks started nursery in a morning. He loves it, but STILL hasnt stopped crying when I leave him in a morning. I think its more for my benefit than actually not liking school. He’s happy enough once Ive left him for a couple of minutes and is really excited and tells me what he’s been up to when I pick him up. He’s been invited to a couple of party’s too so Im hoping he starts to settle soon.

I think one of the problems is the noise levels, its really loud in there (As its bound to be with lots of pre school kids running round) and he doesnt cope well when theres lots of background noise. Its because of his glue ear I think. Which brings me nicely onto the next update.

I took him for a hearing test last week and the Doctor finally cottoned onto the fact that Jacks not actually hearing the noises during the tests half the time, he’s just reacting in the way he’s expected to. He does a test where he has some spinning top shaped discs and he has to tap them against a machine and then when he hears the noise he puts the disc in a box. Ive said the last few times that he’s just putting the disc in the box because he knows thats whats expected of him, not because he can hear the noise every time.

They’ve tried a different test on him this time and its proven how low his hearing is. The doctor has decided to send him for a consultation with the Ear nose and throat surgeon to see about having gromits fitted. Im hoping that this does the trick and that it makes things easier for him. His speech has caught up a lot but I still feel that his hearing affects his day to day life. Especially now in nursery as he cant always hear what his teachers are saying to him and when we visit places like play centres he is a bit overwhelmed at first because of the amount of noise. I dont think people realise how much Glue ear can affect kids and thier behaviour, and dont realise how much it can slow thier development down.

Luke has started pre school, I had nightmares about him screaming the place down when I left him BUT he’s been the complete opposite. He’s settled in really well. He loves going to big boy school and wanders off as soon as we get in there to play and doesnt bat an eyelid when I tell him Im going. I honestly think its because he goes with children he’s grown up going to groups with and its in the same room as all the playgroups we go to with the same staff. He’s picking things up quickly like where to hang his coat and what to do with his coat tag etc. Basically Im really proud of the way he’s coped. After expecting the worst possible scenario he’s made us proud! He’s definately getting more independant. Its only 2 hours a week but its definately worth taking him!

In other news I’ve got a new job. After five years of working on and off at the cricket club Ive been offered another job at a local pub closer to home for more money with gaurenteed hours and they are a bit more sociable hours too. Im not getting in at 1 and 2 o clock in the morning and Im working four nights a week instead of 5. Its early days yet but Im enjoying it. I miss the club though, but more for the people I work with and the regular customers than the work itself. Its different I suppose waitressing but I’ll get used to it in time.

Karls still working hard. He’s bought a comressor recently and has started respraying bits and bobs for people and seems to be enjoying himself. The window tinting side of things has slowed down considerably this year, but thats down to the credit crunch I think. Everyone we know with thier own businesses has said the same thing. People just cant afford to spend money on luxarys for thier cars!

Thats about it I think. Not much been happening, we’re all getting used to things changing so havent really had the time to do much else!

Here’s some recent photo’s

We have an Escape artist….

Ive just gone upstairs to find out why, even though they are supposed to be having quiet time in their rooms, my ceiling is shaking more than krakatoa on a bad day! The kids are squealing their heads off, there’s a trail of toys along the landing from where Luke has thrown them over his gate to wind up mummy. But both boys are now playing with their cars and garage in Luke’s room.

Whats wrong with this? I hear you say.

Nothing, apart from the fact that half an hour ago I put Jack in his room to play with his crayons. We suspected a while ago that he could open the gate to his bedroom door, but after a couple of months of him only opening it when we were there we didn’t think he’d twigged on that he could escape.

I have never seen him move so fast in my entire life! He was out of Luke’s room and back into his quicker than we could whistle the theme from the great escape!

He’s now back in his bedroom looking very sheepish after being told that he mustn’t wander round and come out of his room unless Mummy or Daddy tells him he can.

Im now wondering how long it will be before he’s in our room in the middle of the night???????

What suntan cream Mummy???????????

What suntan cream?
What suntan cream?

#You’ve all seen that picture where the kids have empitied a tin of paint alover the living room floor haven you?

Well imagine how blue the air and the carpet were after I walked into the middle room to find out why luke had gone quiet and found this!

2 and a quarter hours later and Im still shampooing the bloody stuf out the carpet!

after 2 hours of trying to clean it....

Its all about imagination……

Jack has suddenly discovered a whole new little world that exists completely in his head.

In this world there is a little Jack (and Ditchy and Blane) sized house in one corner of my Middle Room. This house has an up and downstairs, needs lots of deshtation (decorating to us mere English speaking mortals), has a gate (an old safety gate) and houses enough different vehicles of one sort or another to make even the most flashy of cribs stars jealous!
At the last count there was a train, a motorbike, a car and even an aeroplane AND a helicopter!!!!!!

This house can also be packed up and moved to whatever location Jack is in at the current time, and the cars etc are summoned just by thinking about them.

Jack has various visitors throughout the day although regular visitor’s include aunty vicky, D and Unca Blane. Luke is allowed to play in there too although I don’t think he has quite the same enthusiasm yet.

Dinner is served whenever you want and normally consists of pasta followed by Jam on toast and a good glass of the finest Juice asda has to offer.

So in summary, I think we can safely say that Jacks imagination is now in overdrive and he keeps us all entertained listening to him natter away to his latest guests…….

I wish I was 2 again so I could live in whatever house I wanted!!!!!!!

We’re doing the big toddle!!!!!

I spotted a poster the other day advertising the big toddle, an annual event to raise money for barnardo’s.

We will be doing it on 19th June at Wonderland Park in Farnsfield, if anyone fancies sponsoring us then please feel free. I will post the link to my fundraising page as soon as I have it.

You could also join us on the walk if you know or have a child under the age of five? Let me know if your interested… the more the merrier I say!

Its basically a half mile “Toddle” for under 5′s. A nice walk and a chance to raise some cash for some needy children!

Anyone got a padlock??????
