Quote of the day from Jack:
“Mummy, I think this bug in my tummy is a spider because I can feel it running round and its making me feel sick!”

Everyone (except Karl who seems to have a stomach of steel) has got this stomach bug thats going round. I started with it tuesday evening and Jacks started this morning. Lukes had it over last weekend but seems to be ok (but a bit quiet) now.
We’re all having a duvet day now and have quarantined ourselves.

Its been a while! October 6, 2008

Whats been happening in the Derner household?

Well Jacks started nursery in a morning. He loves it, but STILL hasnt stopped crying when I leave him in a morning. I think its more for my benefit than actually not liking school. He’s happy enough once Ive left him for a couple of minutes and is really excited and tells me what he’s been up to when I pick him up. He’s been invited to a couple of party’s too so Im hoping he starts to settle soon.

I think one of the problems is the noise levels, its really loud in there (As its bound to be with lots of pre school kids running round) and he doesnt cope well when theres lots of background noise. Its because of his glue ear I think. Which brings me nicely onto the next update.

I took him for a hearing test last week and the Doctor finally cottoned onto the fact that Jacks not actually hearing the noises during the tests half the time, he’s just reacting in the way he’s expected to. He does a test where he has some spinning top shaped discs and he has to tap them against a machine and then when he hears the noise he puts the disc in a box. Ive said the last few times that he’s just putting the disc in the box because he knows thats whats expected of him, not because he can hear the noise every time.

They’ve tried a different test on him this time and its proven how low his hearing is. The doctor has decided to send him for a consultation with the Ear nose and throat surgeon to see about having gromits fitted. Im hoping that this does the trick and that it makes things easier for him. His speech has caught up a lot but I still feel that his hearing affects his day to day life. Especially now in nursery as he cant always hear what his teachers are saying to him and when we visit places like play centres he is a bit overwhelmed at first because of the amount of noise. I dont think people realise how much Glue ear can affect kids and thier behaviour, and dont realise how much it can slow thier development down.

Luke has started pre school, I had nightmares about him screaming the place down when I left him BUT he’s been the complete opposite. He’s settled in really well. He loves going to big boy school and wanders off as soon as we get in there to play and doesnt bat an eyelid when I tell him Im going. I honestly think its because he goes with children he’s grown up going to groups with and its in the same room as all the playgroups we go to with the same staff. He’s picking things up quickly like where to hang his coat and what to do with his coat tag etc. Basically Im really proud of the way he’s coped. After expecting the worst possible scenario he’s made us proud! He’s definately getting more independant. Its only 2 hours a week but its definately worth taking him!

In other news I’ve got a new job. After five years of working on and off at the cricket club Ive been offered another job at a local pub closer to home for more money with gaurenteed hours and they are a bit more sociable hours too. Im not getting in at 1 and 2 o clock in the morning and Im working four nights a week instead of 5. Its early days yet but Im enjoying it. I miss the club though, but more for the people I work with and the regular customers than the work itself. Its different I suppose waitressing but I’ll get used to it in time.

Karls still working hard. He’s bought a comressor recently and has started respraying bits and bobs for people and seems to be enjoying himself. The window tinting side of things has slowed down considerably this year, but thats down to the credit crunch I think. Everyone we know with thier own businesses has said the same thing. People just cant afford to spend money on luxarys for thier cars!

Thats about it I think. Not much been happening, we’re all getting used to things changing so havent really had the time to do much else!

Thank you to Mr Geek for the tag!

I now have to

List 5 current addictions and then tag 2 people.

Ive stuck this on both blogs as Im cheating and feeling lazy…

1) Wii Fit, Its brilliant! Im Waaaay too lazy and busy running round after childerbeasts to go the gym, I know its not going to give me the same kind of workout but its a giggle and far easier than having to worry about getting changed and dragging my ass out the house to go to an overpriced gym after the kids have gone to bed. I at least can pretend I’m having some form of excercise!

2) Bacon Fries, although they have to be Bacon Fries from my work. Its a weird throwback from my pregnancy cravings. I dont know what it is, but they just seem to taste better from work. The only problem is that the bags arent bloody big enough!

3) Virgin TV on Demand. Lets face it, tv’s shite these days, if its not crap like X factor its naff soaps replaying the same storylines over and over again. I’ve just started watching Six feet under, for some reason I never seem to catch these series when they are first played, so i tend to watch a whole series at once over a few nights. There’s loads of really good stuff on there.

4)”Aquiring” new music for my MP4 player. Ive had a new stereo for my new car that i can plug it straight into, much better than having to swap cd’s every two minutes. if I get bored, I just get rid.

5) Facebook games, theres an application called mindjolt on there that has some seriously addictive games. I usually end up playing a couple of games after Ive finished at work.

Boring addictions I know, but to be honest, I dont really have much time to do anything these days.

Anyway, here are my tags first of all http://a1ly.wordpress.com/ I have the feeling that clothes shopping might figure high on this list lol

Secondly is Wigglesworth http://w1ggy.co.uk/blog

Right, thats it, Ive tagged! Dont forget the basic rules you two, list your addictions and tag two people , not me though as Ive already tagged!!!!!!

As we’re both off this week we decided to take the kids to Drayton Manor Park for the day so we could have a look at Thomas Lnd and take the kids to see the animals.

Even though it was chucking it down we enjoyed every minute! The kids were amazed by all the thomas themed rides and Luke had a really close encounter with a tiger! They even managed to get me on a rollercoaster! lol (Ok, so it was a kids one, but it still went really fast! lol)

They do an offer during the week in term time meaning that toddlers and a parent get in for £14, so it cost us £28 for all four of us to go. Normally the tickets cost £23 each for an adult so it was a bargain!!!!!!!

Would totally recommend the place to anyone who has thomas mad kids like us. we all really enjoyed our day!

Highlights were the tourblesome trucks rollercoaster, the animals, the boat ride in thomas land, and the Pirates adventure (A boat ride through different pirate scenes with a bit of a flume and water splash, I got soaked and had to walk back to the car with a wet through bum!)

Ive just gone upstairs to find out why, even though they are supposed to be having quiet time in their rooms, my ceiling is shaking more than krakatoa on a bad day! The kids are squealing their heads off, there’s a trail of toys along the landing from where Luke has thrown them over his gate to wind up mummy. But both boys are now playing with their cars and garage in Luke’s room.

Whats wrong with this? I hear you say.

Nothing, apart from the fact that half an hour ago I put Jack in his room to play with his crayons. We suspected a while ago that he could open the gate to his bedroom door, but after a couple of months of him only opening it when we were there we didn’t think he’d twigged on that he could escape.

I have never seen him move so fast in my entire life! He was out of Luke’s room and back into his quicker than we could whistle the theme from the great escape!

He’s now back in his bedroom looking very sheepish after being told that he mustn’t wander round and come out of his room unless Mummy or Daddy tells him he can.

Im now wondering how long it will be before he’s in our room in the middle of the night???????

i know its not child related! But…….. August 9, 2008

I have just had my ultimate nightmare at work!

I work at a local sports club doing a few evenings a week and a couple of full nights where i have to lock the building up etc.

The main part of the shifts been brilliant, we’ve had a good group of staff on, its been busy enough to pass quickly and everythings gone well.

Until it came to locking the building up that is.

Ive done the usual stuff, made sure everythings locked and turned off etc etc. Gone out the front door to lock it and put the shutters down, First thing I noticed is that the outside big floodlights are off, occasionally they trip but its absolutly pitch black outside as its quite far away from the main road and other houses. Thought nothing of it until it came to locking the front door. The lock wouldnt budge in the door. I tried, and the girl I was with tried too. Neither of us could do it. Went back in and tried to ring my manager, she didnt answer so we decided to bite the bullet and ring the People who Are in complete charge of the club.

Went into the office to find thier number and Emma followed me, couldnt get through to them either. As i put the phone down we heard banging outside in the members bar. Its not a place thats got drafts or has anything anything that could bang so they were definatly noises like someone else was in the building. We immeadiatly locked the office door so that if anyone WAS outside they couldn’t get into us.

We rang 999 and literally minutes later the police turned up. They had a good check and said that if anyone was around chances are we frightened them off by me shouting to Emma to lock the door. They checked internally and externally and said that there was no-one around.

It took them about ten minutes of trying to frce the lock to work for them to operate it! Eventually they managed it and agreed with us that it could have been forced back and tampered with. There were just to many coincedences.

Also last monday one of the other girls said that she had had a white transit van driving round and watching her lock up. They drove off eventually but she was frightened and luckily had her boyfriend with her.

Im convinced that someone has been watching the place and planning this.

Im NEVER locking up on my own again, and if somethings not done about it I will be very surprised!

I’m just goig to add that I dont spook easily, Ive worked in some rough pubs etc and dont normally let things like a few noises bother me, but this was completely different. Its now over an hour later and I can still hear the blood pumping in my ears and my hand is still shaking!

Robin Hood and the Pirates….. August 6, 2008

One of the boys favourite films at the minute is the Disney version of Robin Hood. Luckily we live near to Edwinstowe (Where the major Oak is, Robin Hoods “Home”) It takes us about 30 minutes or so from here to get there and this last week it was the annual robin hood festival.

If anyone lives near Nottinghamshire they should definitely try and get to this event with Kids. Its Brilliant!!!!

The boys absolutely loved it, we watched puppets, spent hours looking for Robin Hood (only to run away as soon as we saw him), bought the obligatory Robin Hood Hats, had a picnic in the restaurant at the visitors centre, watched musicians wandering round performing and Jack even had a run in with a dragon! (I think this was the highlight of the day!) We unfortunately missed the jousting display as were too busy trying to carry all the money Jack had pinched from the bank (Don’t think he quite got the whole idea as he even pretended to get it out the hole in the wall lol)

The boys went dressed up, Jack has a peter pan outfit that we adapted slightly and made him look like Robin Hood, and Luke went as Robin Hoods Pirate friend!

He was enjoying himself until Mummy got the camera out!

We had a brilliant day. Parking was a bit of a nightmare as the parking stewards didnt seem to know exactly what to do with such a huge amount of cars, but other than that we had a brilliant time. If anyone is considering going next year then I would recommend giving yourself the full day there and taking a picnic!

Heres the info for this years festival so you can see the sorts of things going on.

Ive spen all day looking for stuff to decorate the room with for the kids party.

We’ve chosen a pirate theme as Jacks fave film of the minute seems to be Hook.

They are having Pirate costumes for thier birthday from us and Ive managed to blag a room for free and done a deal with a DJ who comes into the mills a lot (Coincidently the same one who did our wedding) so thats not cost us much for starters.

The other day Dad decided he was going to dress up for the party, so, after much persuading Karl agreed to do the same if I would lol!

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a womens pirate costume that doesnt have a skirt up to your eyeballs????????? I can hardly get away with wearing something like that at the best of times, let alone when Im at a kids party lol. So in the end I decided to cheat and go to our local fancy dress shop.

Ive now got a costume consisting of a big white shirt, a black waistcoat with a skull and crossbones on the back, a waist sah and stripy pantaloons with a Jack sparrow type hat.

To put it bluntly, I look like a female version of smee lol

So we’ve got the costumes out the way, Now for decoration…

Firstly we’ve got our little bouncy castle and ball pit so they will be in one corner of the room.

Then we’ve got the disco complete with flashy lights (I hope or Jack will be gutted!)

Ive kjust ordered some pirate decorations from ebay, a door sign, some bunting and some stick on wall decorations,

All Ive got to sort out now is food! So If anyone has any ideas for easy, cheap pirate type food for toddlers, then please share!!!!!!

I’ll post up pics afterwards so you can all se how stupid authentic I look!
