Ive had a letter this morning from my doctors.
(Firstly it was addressed to Jack, Not us…..)
The Department of Health has recommended your child (a two and a half year old with a child! good god what is the world coming to??) receives a HIB?MENC vaccination, this is being offered to all children. It is important for your child’s ongoing health protection to take advantage of this offer (didn’t realise the NHS did special deals, maybe I can get some money off parking vouchers or something???)
Do not hesitate to contact us if you require further information.
Please will you make an appointment with the practice nurse at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Blah blah and blah…
Basically, the letters saying that Ive forgotten to make an appointment for Jack to have his meningitis injections.
Now let me tell you whats actually happened!
I had Jack immunised against MENC when this injection first came out. I’ve seen the effect that meningitis has on children (If they survive it) and agree completely with this injection. So the second point I’m going to make is that he’s not sue the initial injection, as this letter suggests, but a booster.
In September I received a similar letter asking me to make an appointment for both boys to go along and have the initial injection again. I rang up and informed them that they had already had the injection only to be told they needed a booster.
Fair enough, I made an appointment (And also pointed out that Luke hadn’t had any of his 12 month injection either! Something I had had to do with Jack too) I had to wait a couple of weeks for the appointment.
I got there 15 minutes early and sat in the waiting room patiently, Eventually (Late) I heard the boys names being called and went into the nurses room.
The Nurse then told me that it was a mistake, that Jack didn’t need the injection after all. I should have guessed by the way she informed me of this that she wasn’t 100% sure if this was correct. She said that he would receive his booster as part of his pre school checkup. She also then told me that Luke wouldn’t be having his MENC and 12 month boosters injections in one go and that I would need to come back in another two weeks to get the boosters done.
Gritting my teeth over the fact that the nurse and receptionist clearly didn’t read from the same book, We had Luke’s injections. Jack, who I had spent all morning preparing and explaining injections to, was confused as to why he wasn’t having any.
So this morning, I rang the doctors to ask why I was now getting letters basically insinuating that I hadn’t bothered to organise Jacks injections, when I had previously booked him in months ago and was told that he didn’t need them! Surprise surprise they had to ring me back. An hour later, the practice nurse rang me back and said she understood there had been some confusion and miscommunication (Erm, not on my part love!) and that apparently, guideline’s had changed again and now it seems Jack DID need the injection!!!!
As you can imagine, I don’t believe this for a minute. I think they have messed up and are blaming the easiest possible target, Guidelines. I’m in two minds to check that the guidelines have changed so many times in such a short period of time.
It also makes me wonder how many other children are wandering round because these people don’t know who needs injections and who doesn’t!
So all in all, the list of cock-ups is this:
They cant address a letter properly, IE sending it to Jack, instead of the parents of.
They don’t bother to write to people and tell them that 12 month boosters are needed (apparently both times they cant understand why its not been flagged up, once is possibly a mistake, but twice in the same family is unacceptable!)
The Nurse and the receptionist don’t read from the same guidelines as to who needs what so the receptionist sends out letters that may or may not be needed. Even when the nurse is informing you a mistake has been made and your times been wasted, she doesn’t fill you with confidence as she uses words like ” we don’t THINK jack needs them etc etc)
Healdswood surgery, What a farce!!!!!!!!!!
Edit:
Since writing this ive been in touch with NHS direct who have told me that there havent been any changes to guidlines at all!
Needless to say I’m in the process of speaking to the immunisations co-ordinator at the trust to check that bpoth of them are up to date with injections and to complain about the lack of care/knowledge that the surgery seems to have. Im lucky that Jacks not caught meningitis in the mean time really.

Four Bloody hours Ive been sat in A&E today! Lukes dropped something on his foot and with the speed it turned purple at, added to the fat that it was swollen and he wouldnt stand on it, I decided a trip to casualty was needed.
It took me forty minutes to park, then I sat for another hour Just waiting to see the triage nurse!!!!!!!!!!!
I swear to god Kings Mill Hospital gets worse and worse, the thing that really gets my goat is that the triage nurse is sat nattering away with her door open while us idiots are sat there waiting! Then we had to wait another hour and a half to see a doctor so he could tell us the inevitable, “He needs xrays!” Wow, the mans a genious! Give him a medal! Why the triage nurse couldnt decide this I’ll never know!
Another half an hour in xray, lots of screaming from a very upset Luke and we head back off to casualty for another hour while they look at his xrays.
Might I add that during the last hour we were there I had to go change Luke, to do this I had to go into the back of the treatment area to get to baby changing. Sat there drinking coffee and reading books were 4 nurses, and two doctors! One of the doctors was muttering about being disturbed and having to put his book down as we came back through.
Welcome to the NHS people!
If I could afford it, we’d definatly go private! mainly so we could get away from the incompetance of the morons calling themself medical staff at that place!
Conclusion in the end?
Luke has a bruised foot. His xrays have come back clear luckily. So forthe pleasure of 10 minutes treatment, we’ve sat in a not very overcrowded waiting room waiting for four hours!!!!!!!!!

Last week I bought Jack a thomas the Tank Engine Potty training chart. We’d started training him a few months ago, but it had ground to a halt a little bit with the arrival of Molly Puppy. After all, the last thing we needed was bits being bitten lol. Try explaining that one in casualty!!!!!!!
Anyway, its been a roaring sucess! Within five minutes of it arriving Jack had used his potty, then again about half an hour later!
Luke being Luke and being a clever little so and so, quickly cottened onto the fact that Jack got loads of praise for using hi potty and stickers too.
So,,,,, a couple of days ago, he proudly came running over and asked to use the potty. humouring him I took his nappy off and stuck him on it.
I almost dropped to the floor when he proudly stood up and announced that he’d “done wee wee”
19 months old and he’s ready for potty training!
He’s used it twice today, so we’ve used the back of Jacks chart (Thank god its two sided) and been sticking him stickers on every time he’s used it.
Im so proud of both my little men! Jack seems more interested and enthusiastic this time, and Im sure that the healthy dose of compettion is helping too.
Tonight it was very strange walking into the living room and seeing both boys plonked on potts. As you can ee from the photo below, Jacks approach is slightly more relaxed than Lukes! hehe

All of you who know Luke know how much he loves going for naps and bedtime. well today is the first time ever that he’s cried when Ive put him in his cot for his nap. He was determined that he wasnt going to go to bed and wanted to go downstairs or in our room. This is five minutes or so after he’s asked to go for nanights and started rubbing his eyes!
I tried going up, calming him down and then putting him back in the cot but its not worked. In the end after five minutes or so of crying he’s setted and dropped off!
I thikn the problem is that he ha a bad dream or somethig yesterday at naptime and I was trying to get ready for work at the time so when he fell asleep while I was cuddling him, I lay him on the bed next to me in my room. BIG mistake! I always said I wouldnt let the kids in bed with us while they were little because I dont think they would settle and to be honest I dont think I would be able to settle properly anyway. I’d be too worried about squashing them or something.
He’s obviously now decided that Mummys bed is much more confortable because he was screaming to go in mummys room while he was protesting about his nap.
Looks like we’re in for a few rough days of tantrums and crying at bedtime!

Firstly Hppy New Year to everyone who reads the blog!
As you’ve probably guessed from the lack of decent updates here recently, its been pretty manic since Molly came to live with us!
Christmas morning was an early start, 6am!!!!!!!!!!!! As you can imagine, after 4 night shifts at work, I was shattered and the kids werent too impressed with being up at that time either! The reason we got up so stupidly early is because we were expecting a visit from santa at 7am bringing more presents that had been let at Mama’s and Grandad’s house instead of here.
Santa finally turned up at 8.15 after Karl rang him to see where he was. We were told that Santa had decided not to get us up early because I’d been at work late. Brilliant you might think? Only problem was that santa didnt bother to actually tell us, so we had two shattered hyper kids sat there waiting for santa arriving and two iritated parents!
But ho hum!
When he did arrive the kids faces were well worth the early morning I thought Jack was going to cry he was so excited! We’ve got some lovely photo’s of them sat on his knee. I’ll post them up later or at the bottom of this post.
By this time we were struggling to see our living room floor at all, there were so many presents!
later on in the morning we went up to my mum and dad’s for dinner, By this time the kids were twigging onto the fact that today was present day, so were becoming experts at unwrapping them at lightening speed!
We never know what My Mum and Dad are getting the kids, so you can imagine how surprised we were to find that santa had bought them a train set with a big table to keep it all in. Thankfully this was a “stay at Grandma and Grandads” toy! God knows where it would have fit in our house lol
For about the first hour or so, all other presents got ignored despite or best efforts to distract thm from the train set! lol.
more presents were unwrapped and there was a brief visit from Uncle Frank and Auntie Pauline with lods more pressies!
Dinner as usual was lovely. This year my two cousins had dinner with us rather than tea which meant they got to see the kids properly, I dont thikn James has ever met Luke properly before! lol (James finished Uni in Hull this year, and Alex has started at Lincoln this year)
After an afternoon of relaxing (pffft, fat chance with my two running round!) we went up to Karls Mums, madness as usual, but nice to have everyone together. (apart from danny, lesley and the kids who didnt want to drive)
I think it was about 9ish that we got home, the kids had a quick play with new toys then toddled off to bed. To be honest I dont think we were far behind them!
Boxing day we had a lazy morning before heading off to my Auntie Jeans to see her for an hour or so. She had bought the kids some gorgeous pj’s, really soft brused cotton ones that they look really nice in! She was babysitting her friends grandson, Luke was extremly confused as to why there was a baby at Auntie Jeans!!!!!!!
We left there and headed to Karls dad’s. We dont speak to them often and Karl hasnt really had much to do with his dad’s side of the family for years, but we recently had a christmas card from his cousin Jo so at least knew a couple of people there. We didnt stay late as it was my staff chrsitmas do. Karl nipped up with me for a bit with the kids, then he came home while I staggered around sutton for a bit. (staggered being the operative word!)
Other than that the whole christmas period had been quite busy, We’ve been to Meadowhall a couple of time, and it was Karls birthday yesterday so me and the kids got up and dcorated the car with balloons.
Not really much else to tell to be honest.
Its my new years resolution to update the blog a bit more though. Now the pups calming down a bit I should have a bit more time!
So Happy New year everyone! Hope you all had a good christmas!
All the best for 2008
